Teaching the Whole Student
Cultivating a positive mindset, learning to grow from failure and developing a sense of self are just some of the crucial skills our students need, particularly in these challenging times. In this talk, I will be looking at how we can use our unique position as language teachers to encourage our students both to study well and to live well.
Katherine Stannett is an author with over twenty years of experience. She spent two years in Japan in the 1990s, teaching English to a wide variety of students in many different settings. She is the co-author of the several successful secondary series and has also written articles, songs and raps for many popular EFL magazines. Most recently, she has written two levels of the new National Geographic Middle School series, ‘Impact’ and one level of the new National Geographic Primary series, ‘Look’. She has given presentations and run workshops in many countries around the world, including Poland, Kazakhstan, Portugal, Honduras, Brazil, Spain and Slovenia and also conducts webinars from her home office in the UK.

Powering The Classroom Through Ideas
The role of the teacher is multi-faceted – not only do we have the responsibility of developing our learners’ language knowledge and skills, but also the cognitive, social and interpersonal skills they need to in order to be successful in school, work and life in the 21st century. Not least amongst these is the need to get our learners to start thinking for themselves and asking questions, rather than being spoon-fed. With examples from National Geographic Learning’s Perspectives series, in this session I’ll show how we can incorporate visible thinking routines into our lessons to not only Getting students talking and actively engaged in classroom discussions isn’t always the easiest thing. So how can we facilitate this? How can we stimulate them to actually think, ask questions and have opinions? Using examples from National Geographic Learning’s Perspectives series, in this presentation we’ll show how using authentic content and the ideas they bring can help power discussion, critical thinking and creativity in the ELT classroom.
Alex Warren is a DELTA trained teacher trainer with over 15 years’ experience of working in ELT as a teacher, academic director and teacher trainer. Prior to his experiences in ELT, Alex worked as a journalist before a chance encounter in the Indonesian jungle began him on the path which has led him to working with National Geographic Learning. A firm believer in a communicative approach to language learning and student-centred learning, Alex enjoys working with innovative, thought-provoking materials and presenting on a wide range of ELT-related topics, all the while driven by his passion for developing teachers on a global scale and helping them to reach their true potential.
